Clifford Cliff V's Dorm Room

Fiver hears muted voices from the room next door and strains to make out what's being said, but can't. He hears the door to his sister's room close and surrepticiously cracks his door to peek out and see Virgil slipping away. Fiver quickly closes the door, when the enormous blond kid squatting next to him on the floor, still wearing the Viking costume he wore trick-or-treating, complains...

THOR

Damn it all, Fiver, it's nearly four in the morning. Roll the damn dice, will ya?!
The three other guys squeezed into the room agree and urge the heir to the Cliff name and fortune to cover his point, fer chrissake! Fiver puts a ten in the pile of currency, shakes the dice and tosses the dice up against the wall. He doesn't even check out his roll though, since he's back at the door checking the hallway just in time to see that Virgil isn't leaving after all. But neither is he returning to Char's room. Nope, he's being welcomed into Karen Leigh's room and open arms. Fiver's loudly exclaimed "Shit!" is assumed by all present to be in reaction to the snakeyes he threw, but it is, in fact, for his sister's sure to be broken heart.

His fraternal concern is quickly dismissed though-- Char's so stable and level and not one bit the romantic type. He doesn't have to worry about her, oh no! She worries about him! So, having rationalized his self-centeredness, Fiver turns his attention back to the craps on the floor. He can't quite ignore the audible proof that he might have some emotional crap to deal with yet, though, as his gaming companions all groan at the sound of the Mamas & the Papas coming through the wall....

Dream a Little Dream

Stars shining bright above you
Night breezes seem to whisper I love you
Birds singing in the sycamore tree
Dream a little dream of me

Say nighty-night and kiss me
Just hold me tight and tell me you'll miss me
While I'm alone and blue as can be
Dream a little dream of me

Stars fading but I linger on, dear
Still craving your kiss
I'm longing to linger til dawn, dear
Just saying this

Sweet dreams til sunbeams find you
Sweet dreams that leave all worries behind you
But in your dreams whatever they be
Dream a little dream of me

Stars fading but I linger on, dear
Still craving your kiss
I'm longing to linger til dawn, dear
Just saying this

Sweet dreams til sunbeams find you
Sweet dreams that leave all worries far behind you
But in your dreams whatever they be
Dream a little dream of me

Fiver curses his luck-- not only has he lost several hundred dollars already tonight (this morning?), but he has lost the safety-net of Char. She's playing sappy love songs for a man who's, by now, bedding Karen, a lifelong friend. This stinks. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but soon and for a long time, she's going to be absolutely useless to him as "the good one".
